“Stop staring”
That dog with the human face being insecure about his appearance is a vibe.
It’s rare for a sequel to hold on to that same energy and wonder that made the first a success, but Haunted School 2 does it flawlessly. I felt the same unbridled joy I had watching the original here, which makes me excited to watch the remaining two films.
The plot is essentially the same: a misfit group of kids get trapped in a haunted school overnight and run around avoiding all the insane ghosts the writers could think of. These films are strange coming of age films and I’m here for it.
The new addition this time is tying the hauntings to a…

The thing I find most endearing about these Japanese horror movies starring and primarily geared towards children (and me apparently) is the perfect balance between playfulness and a sense of melancholy that I don’t recall seeing a whole lot of other horror movies manage or even attempt to strike. Kids will love the silly slapstick humor and horror gags that are as creepy as they are charming but the real emotional core will only resonate with the adults accompanying them. As expected from the unexpected writer, Satoko Okudera.

Watched during my Summer of J-Horror V.
After watching some unsubbed stuff I kinda got it in my head that it'd be fine but I've melted my brain and I gotta take a break from that. It's easier when it's a short/anthology haha.
So I won't rate this though I my best to give it a real watch; much like the first it seems very cute and comedic with some fun effects. Would like to revisit it down the line (plus the sequels) when I can actually get the plot.

I wonder if any parent groups complained that the first Haunted School was too scary, because this one is decidedly sillier and cartoonier. The wonky subtitles weren’t helping, either.

I think i liked this a bit more than the first. Lots of fun scares, the kids are adorable and it's rather heartwarming.

Not quite as hot on this one. Hideyuki Hirayama has a visibly bigger budget to work with, and what I noticed immediately was the amount of dolly shots, followed by how clean this school looked compared to the first movie's setting. Once the whimsical synth-orchestra kicked in I realized what was happening and it took about half the movie to adjust expectations.
That said, you may have noticed the heart, so let's talk about what I liked.
The effects are less gruesome (and more CG) but clever gags still pop up, my favorites being a stopmotion statue checking out library books and a creepy principal with a very, very long neck. My biggest takeaway will probably be the interlude with…

Wow. What. A. Banger!!
I swear to gosh, tears came to my eyes during the ending. How I get so invested in these kids, I don't know, but I just do 😂❤️
The two old people dancing was so sweet by itself, especially when you learn more. It's sooo cuuuute!! 😭
The kids' banter throughout was great as always, lots of bickering and even heartfelt conversation. There's also a mute kid who bonds with a thief, as - for unknown reasons - he fully understands his whistling 🥰🤭 So that bond was sweet, as you could tell it meant a lot to that kid to be thoroughly understood.
Not as much going on in this - definitely waaaay less intense,…

Haunted School 2 was a blast, almost as good as the first one. Some of the things you get to see: giant bugs, a long necked lady, a creature hand that comes out of the toilet, a stop motion statue, a really creepy scene involving an old witch lady, an interesting looking dog, and an awesome clock monster as the final boss.
Though most of the best effects remain practical they still partake in some of that awful mid 90's CGI, unfortunately the Japanese Slimer ghost takes a pretty big hit looking like a Sega Saturn cut scene. Still a really fun movie, even without subtitles it's not hard to figure out what's going on--probably since it's a kids movie.… -
